The Early Years

Joseph Manchin III was born on August 24, 1947, in Farmington, West Virginia. He grew up in a working-class family and attended West Virginia University, where he earned a degree in business administration. After graduating, Manchin worked as a coal miner and insurance agent before entering politics.

Political Career

Manchin's political career began in 1982, when he was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates. He served in the House for 12 years, rising to the position of Speaker of the House in 1996. In 2004, Manchin was elected Governor of West Virginia, a position he held until 2010.

In 2010, Manchin was elected to the United States Senate, where he represents West Virginia. He is a member of the Democratic Party, but is considered a conservative on many issues.

Manchin is married to Gayle Manchin, a former West Virginia Secretary of State. They have three children.
